Manifestation in Islam: Beyond the Trend

We previously explored the growing popularity of manifestation, its psychological foundations, and how some aspects align with Islamic principles while others conflict with the concept of Tawakkul (trust in Allah). In this follow-up, I want to address a deeper question that often emerges in counselling conversations:

Why are so many people drawn to manifestation in the first place?

The answer may have less to do with attracting wealth, success, or relationships and more to do with our human need for certainty, control, and hope.

The Desire to Feel in Control

Life can feel unpredictable. We face disappointments, losses, unanswered prayers, and situations that seem beyond our influence. Manifestation often appeals because it offers a reassuring message:

"You can create your reality."

For someone feeling powerless, this can be incredibly comforting.

As a counsellor, I often see that beneath the desire to manifest a particular outcome lies a deeper emotional need to feel safe, secure, valued, or in control of one's future.

Islam does not ignore these needs. Rather, it offers a different response.

Instead of promising complete control, Islam teaches us how to live with uncertainty while remaining emotionally and spiritually grounded. Sounds so difficult, but isn’t this the sheer essence of Tawakkul?

The Difference Between Hope and Control

One of the challenges with manifestation culture is that it can blur the line between hope and control.

Hope says:

"I pray this happens and I will work towards it.”

Control says:

"If I think correctly, believe strongly enough, or visualise intensely enough, this outcome must happen."

I myself have fallen victim to this thought. If I think strongly enough of the destiny or outcome I desire, I can change my destiny and achieve what I feel I should have received by now. My sense of entitlement and reckoning that I knew what was good for me are my downfalls.

The reality is that many things in life are not within our control. We can prepare for an interview and still not get the job. We can desire marriage and still face delays. We can make dua for a specific outcome and receive something different.

Islam encourages hope with submission to the will of Allah SWT. This eradicates all notions of control and belief around knowing what is best for me on the larger scale of things. I may know I need to do more exercise to feel better, but I cannot control the specific outcome of said exercise, for instance, a dumbbell may fall on my foot.

When Goals Become Idols

There is nothing wrong with wanting success, healing, financial stability, or a loving relationship. These are natural human desires.

Problems arise when the goal itself becomes the source of our happiness, identity, or self-worth.

Many people unknowingly move from:

"I would like this."

to

"I need this to be happy."

This shift can create anxiety, disappointment, and spiritual struggle.

Islam reminds us that while goals are important, our ultimate purpose is not found in achieving every desire. Our purpose is found in our relationship with Allah.

Paradoxically, people often experience greater emotional peace when they pursue goals wholeheartedly while accepting that their worth does not depend on achieving them.

The Emotional Impact of "Failed Manifestation"

A topic rarely discussed in manifestation circles is what happens when things do not work out.

When success is attributed entirely to positive thinking, failure can easily become interpreted as personal failure:

  • "I didn't believe enough."

  • "My mindset wasn't strong enough."

  • "I attracted negative outcomes."

  • "Something is wrong with me."

This can increase shame, self-blame, and emotional distress. Again, I have fallen victim to this mindset also, corrupting peace with these aimless thoughts.

Islam offers a more compassionate framework.

Sometimes we do everything we can and the outcome still differs from what we wanted. This does not necessarily reflect weak faith, insufficient positivity, or personal inadequacy.

Sometimes Allah's wisdom unfolds in ways we do not immediately understand.

The Counselling Perspective

In therapy, we often help clients distinguish between:

What They Can Control

  • Their actions

  • Their attitudes

  • Their choices

  • Their effort

  • Their responses to challenges

What They Cannot Control

  • Other people's decisions

  • Timing

  • External events

  • Unexpected setbacks

  • Outcomes

Psychological wellbeing improves when we focus our energy on what is within our sphere of influence rather than becoming consumed by what is not.

Interestingly, this mirrors a deeply Islamic approach to life.

A Faith-Centred Alternative

Rather than manifestation, Muslims may benefit from a framework built on:

  • Intention (Niyyah)

Being clear about what we seek and why.

  • Effort (Amal)

Taking practical and consistent action.

  • Dua

Turning to Allah with sincerity and humility.

  • Tawakkul

Trusting Allah with what lies beyond our control.

  • Acceptance (Rida)

Finding peace with Allah's wisdom, even when life unfolds differently than expected.

This approach allows us to dream, plan, and strive without becoming emotionally dependent on a specific outcome.

Final Reflections

The popularity of manifestation highlights a genuine human longing for hope, certainty, and transformation. These desires are not weaknesses; they are part of being human.

The question is where we place our trust.

As Muslims, we are encouraged to think positively, make dua, pursue our goals, and expect good from Allah. Yet we are also reminded that true peace comes not from controlling every outcome, but from trusting the One who controls all outcomes.

Perhaps the most powerful mindset is not:

"I can manifest anything I want."

But rather:

"I will strive for what is good, trust Allah with the result, and believe that whatever He decrees ultimately contains wisdom."

That mindset nurtures both psychological resilience and spiritual wellbeing, something far more lasting than any trend.
